Normally, I avoid reporting on products that get too much coverage, unless I have something different to say about it. Such is the case with the Nyko Wireless Nunchuk, a product that other gadget blogs are really bashing unnecessarily.

I had a chance to try out the Nyko Wireless Nunchuk at CES 2008, and I absolutely adored it. A lot of gadget blogs are asking whether the product is really necessary, but I say: “Of course it is! This is the new millennium, and everything is going to be wireless by the time we reach the end of this millennium.”

Clearly, the negative reviewers have not played some of the Wii games that I play. For example, there are moves on the Dancing with the Stars video game that require moving the Wiimote and Nunchuk in a locomotion dance. The wire really gets in the way of the dancing, and so removing the wire makes it a lot easier. Also, I have a dog and a newborn baby who have this annoying habit of grabbing onto the connector wire while I’m trying to play. Now the doggy and baby won’t have anything to grab. Thank you, Nyko!

Another complaint is that the price is too high, but I think that $19.99 is a small price to pay for something wireless. I have seen wireless products that do less useful things at a higher price.

So, in your face, other gadget blogs! The Nyko Wireless Nunchuk is a cool product, and deserves some respect. If you’ve got the Wii, get the Nyko Wireless Nunchuk and give it the love it needs.

In response to the extraordinary success of the Eee PC ultraportable notebook, Asus has announced some big plans for the future. Not only do we have a number of new Eee PC models on the way but the Eee brand is going to be expanded to an entire family of products.

After a very healthy year in 2007, Asus is poised to keep growing and gain more ground with their low-cost computing solutions. The Eee PC addressed an important area, bringing a low cost to the ultraportable segment, but that formula can be used for other products as well. According to DigiTimes we will soon see “E” versions of a desktop, monitor, and television. These are currently known as the E-DT, E-Monitor, and E-TV respectively, and they will focus on keeping costs down.

Asustek’s President, Jerry Shen, announced a few details about each product recently, some of which are going to get the community quite excited, especially after the growing love for the Eee PC. The desktop is slated to arrive as soon as April or May, and may cost as little as $200-$300. It will start off with a Celeron processor, but will eventually be moved to Intel’s Shelton’08 platform. The monitor is even more exciting–it’s an all-in-one PC with a proposed price tag of just $499. It will be competing with products that cost twice that, though won’t have current generation hardware, like what we see from Apple and Dell. It will have a 19-21″ display and a TV tuner, though. Finally the television will be a large LCD, but will have a built-in computer and should sell for a premium of no more than $200 over the competition. This model is the biggest stretch for Asus, but based on HP’s MediaSmart televisions, we know there is a market for this.

This is all big news from Asus. Nothing is totally confirmed yet, and consumers should have learned not to trust those prices or release dates until they can actually buy the product, but it is still very exciting stuff, especially for all those people who think the Eee PC was their best purchase of 2007.

There is no doubt that everybody wants to have a cell phone, which would be resistant to any damage. Because of this a lot of different devices made of durable materials (titanium, gold and etc) were produced. Yet producers are still trying to find different ways to solve this problem.

One of the concepts was offered by Robert Hayes and Johan Feenstra. According to their innovative approach to the cell phone production new devices should be very flexible; they think that this will significantly prolong cell phones’ useful time. To do so they are going to make these cell phones of new polymer that can easily change its shape. Thus, you will be able to do everything you want with this gadget or almost everything. For example, you can throw, drop or even sit down on it. This device will look like a small bag made of dense material that is filled with a kind of liquid. The display, which will have the resolution of 433 × 266 pixels, will change its shape too. Developers insist that this gadget will have quite a high frame rate, enabling watching video clips and movies.

As far as consumers are concerned I think that a significant amount of them will want to possess such an original cell phone. However, its flexibility may be considered by some people as a disadvantage, because it will be probably quite an unusual feeling to speak over such a “soft” cell phone.

Filed under: Peripherals While it won’t reduce your carbon footprint as much as something like, say, the HumanCar, the folks behind the Ecobutton seem to think their new device will do its small part nonetheless, even if it’s actual necessity may be somewhat in question. Apparently, the device will let you switch your PC to “ecomode” at the press of a button, although exactly what that is and how it differs from your usual sleep or hibernation mode is a bit of a mystery. The button seemingly does something to your PC, however, as the FAQ warns that some older computers and certain HP PCs may have trouble reactivating due to BIOS issues. No word as to when they’ll be available directly to consumer just yet, but those looking to turn ‘em into a business opportunity can order some now from “recognized promotional gift distributors” for between $12 and $18 apiece depending on the quantity.

Believe us, we know just how foggy things get when trying to remember back to the 13th day of December 2007, but sure enough, it was on that faithful Thursday that we received our first sneak peek at QNAP’s (then) forthcoming TS-409. Today, however, we’re looking at the official product: a 4-bay, hot-swappable NAS that supports such beautiful features as online RAID capacity expansion and RAID level migration. Reportedly filled with “disaster-proof enhancements,” this unit also includes an HDD S.M.A.R.T. function that provides complete hard drive information including temperature and overall “health.” No concrete word on price, but a quick scan of the intarweb pegs it right around $600.

In a novel twist in trying to get new employment, one online startup is offering potential candidates cash for attending interviews.

Rather than going to an agency or submitting your resume to an online site, NotchUp.com would like you to use its service instead. You still submit your details, qualifications, and previous experience, but you also get to set a price for interview. Any prospective employers can then view your details and then, if interested, must pay the amount you have specified to gain an interview.

If the interview goes ahead, then NotchUp.com will pay the fee into your PayPal account minus a transaction charge of between 15-20%. The site is not second rate in its prospective employers either, with Google, Yahoo!, and Facebook all taking an interest. As for candidates, over 10,500 have now signed up as of last week, paving the way for some serious interview cash changing hands.

NotchUp.com is run by Jim Abrams and Rob Ellis who say that the site is aimed at people who are already happily employed but want to be passive in searching for a new job. If you are wondering what a good price to set for interview is, the company recommends you choose somewhere between US$200-$500 depending on your experience.

This does sound like a very good idea. I have used agencies in the past and have ended up attending a few interviews where I was clearly either not interested in the position they were offering or had totally the wrong skills.

Unfortunately with agencies, they are as interested in earning the money from placing you as they are in finding you the job you want. Employers also get annoyed with them, due to the price they charge (typically 10-30% of your salary) and the poorly chosen candidates they often send for interviews.

At least with this service, it is the employers in control. The company only sees candidates it believes will fit the job, and the candidate is better off, because even if he or she doesn’t get the position, then they have a few hundred dollars for the time.

Even if you don’t intend to sign up for the service, it’s worth a visit to calculate your interview price. Mine came back at $250.
